On The Verge

I follow a technology blog called “The Verge” and once a month they will do a talk show sorta thing. The main editors will get together, talk technology, have a guest, and give away some sweet prizes. This month, rather than someone a major person in the tech field, their guest was a major person in general, Jimmy Fallon. You see, the main editor of The Verge, Josh Topolsky, will make appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to discuss recent trends in technology. This week, Jimmy returned the favor by coming on Josh’s show. Very fun (and funny) night. Best part? It’s free!

New York Style Squash

When most people think of squash, they usually first think about the vegetable and not the racquette sport. We were walking through Grand Central Terminal a few week ago and came across a professional squash tournament. Since its an annual thing, we we really weren’t too surprised, but it was great to see it there. Squash, when you think about it, really is the perfect sport for Manhattan: the court is small, enclosed, and can be put pretty much anywhere… literally, anywhere. Actually, we had a squash court on the roof of our previous apartment building. It was awesome to come walking out after playing for a bit and see the cityscape at night.

But did you know that this is not the only sport that takes place in GCT? There are tennis courts that are always around. Technically, they are public, but they will run you $100-$250 an hour, so i doubt Jaime and I will be using them anytime soon… yea… not so much… http://www.theawl.com/2012/01/playing-tennis-at-grand-central

Reflection

Construction on a building known as the “Lever House” in Manhattan was completed in 1952. While the building may not look like much today, it was the first “glass-curtain wall” skyscraper in NYC.  If you look at a picture of the building, it looks totally ordinary and humdrum compared to today’s buildings.  The reason I bring this up is because these curtain walled buildings allow for some really cool pictures.

In this shot, the glass building in the foreground in the Hyatt at Grand Central Terminal.  The building in the reflection is the Chrysler Building, one of the most iconic and beautiful buildings (and also one of my personal favorites) in NYC.   It was completed in 1930 and is great display of Art-Deco styling.  As much as I love this building, this older-style building doesn’t allow for these kind of reflection shots. I like the juxtaposition of both styles and how they complement each other.

On another note, I know, I know… it’s been a while and I totally failed on the Photo365 project. Thankfully i only have to walk about 50 feet to work every day. But along with that, i really don’t get a chance to see to much 6 out of 7 days of the week.  I’ll try posting pictures, but there really won’t be a set timeline of when shots will go up.

Going Green

A woman in a green dress talking with a man in a green shirt while sitting on the fire escape of their green building. It was just asking to get photographed.

365.091 – Birthday Sunset

20110613-103458.jpg

Today was Jaime’s Birthday! The big Two-Five! We went out to eat at this place down in Battery Park City. The food was pretty good, but they paled in comparison to the the unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and New York Harbor. After dinner, we waked the esplanade and watched the sunset. It was a wonderful evening.

Happy Birthday, Jaime!

365.090 – Mountain Man

20110613-050307.jpg

Got a chance to hang out with my brother and a friend for a bit today. During our conversation, it came out that there are some places to do some bouldering in Central Park, so we decided to go over and check it out. It wasn’t that high, but it gets the job done. I let him have all the fun. I just took the picture.

On a different note, earlier in the day, I literally saw him shoot and kill a fly in our apartment… with a rubber band. Climbing rocks and shooting flies with rubber bands sounds like it has potential to be an interesting biathlon competition. He may have a lock on the Gold for that competition.

As per the photography, i’m hoping that the shallow depth of field gives you an idea for the angle that he’s actually hanging on at. And if that doesn’t help, here’s another shot.

365.089 – Chandelier

20110613-050055.jpg

Jaime was going down to hang out with her girlfriends from college on her birthday weekend, and I decided to hop on the bus with her and take a last minute trip with her down to AC. Before she hung out with them, we got a chance to pick up some last minute tickets to a Brian Regan show; he was in the Borgata. This casino is ridiculously swanky and chic, as seen by this massive chandelier you’re greeted with when you walk inside. Very funny show, very upscale vide.

PS – I’m sorry that the picture is kinda grainy. I wasn’t allow to bring the DSLR down to the casino, so i had to get by with my point-n-shoot. Sigh…

365.087 – Sitting on Babies

20110613-045706.jpg

Today was the first time (since we were ~16 years old) that Jaime and I were babysitters. Our neighbors from down the hall were heading out for the night and we had the pleasure of watching their daughter, Jhanavi (previous post).  All in all she was really quite good, and since we were watching her at the same time as our weekly small group with church, she hung out with the group and just sat there looking cute.

Also, I’m glad Jaime knows how to feed and change a baby. Enough said.

365.086 – Nightfall

20110609-111510.jpg

One of the fun things about living in NYC is that people come here. Two of our friends, Nicole and Nick, decided to take their 1 year anniversary trip up here to the big apple, and we were fortunate enough to hang out with them for a bit.  Nicole, though having come to the city many times, sheepishly confessed that she had yet to eat real New York pizza.  This was a problem that needed to be rectified.  Girmaldi’s. Straight up coal-oven pizza under the Brooklyn Bridge in a gritty, dungy building (in case you forgot, here’s the previous post). And there was no line. Perfect.  Sadly the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory was closed by the time we got out, so we decided to walk the bridge home.

This view never gets old.
